John VanNewkirk

John VanNewkirk, Teton Industries’ founder and President has a proven track record in managing manufacturing businesses.  VanNewkirk led a successful turnaround of a steel service center in southern China for Van Shung Chong Holdings (VSC), a publicly listed company in Hong Kong with annual revenue of approximately US$ 250 million.   In addition, VanNewkirk established a Building Products Division that sells and installs kitchens and bathrooms to large developers in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining VSC, VanNewkirk served as a management consultant with Bain & Company in Hong Kong and San Francisco.  During his years at Bain, VanNewkirk developed and implemented growth strategies for Fortune 500 companies.  His experience across a spectrum of industries included cost reduction, process re-engineering, new market development, distribution strategy and implementation, and corporate strategy.

In addition, VanNewkirk has worked in a variety of senior roles at Internet related business-to-business startups and a venture capital fund.  This experience has built on his business development, industry analysis, financial and strategic planning, and team building skills and has involved him in raising over $15 million in venture capital.

VanNewkirk has a Bachelor of Sciences (Honors) from Brown University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.  He is married with two children.

 

Craig Burr

Craig Burr is a founder of Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co., a private investment firm with over $400 million under management. Mr. Burr's career has been devoted almost exclusively to venture capital activities, and he has backed numerous leading growth companies in a variety of different industries.

Previously, Mr. Burr was a Partner at TA Associates. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the New England Venture Capital Association.

He serves on the Boards of Directors of several private companies. Mr. Burr received his BA, cum laude, from Harvard College and his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Bill Egan

Bill Egan is a founder and General Partner of Alta Communications, a private investment firm with over $1 billion under management. Mr. Egan founded Alta's predecessor firm, Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co. in 1979 and has identified and backed several of America's leading growth companies in the information technology, life sciences, and communications industries.

Prior to founding Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co., Mr. Egan was a Partner at TA Associates. He began his career as a Manager of Venture Capital for New England Enterprise Capital Corporation.

Mr. Egan is past President and Chairman of the National Venture Capital Association and serves on several Boards of Directors of communications, cable, and information technology companies. Mr. Egan received his BA from Fairfield University and his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance.

Hiroshi Mikitani

Hiroshi Mikitani is founder and CEO of Rakuten, Inc., Japan’s premier e-commerce company.  Rakuten operates Japan’s favorite online shopping site, Infoseek Japan, and numerous other media and e-commerce properties.  Rakuten was listed on Jasdaq in April 2000.

Mr. Mikitani has received international recognition as an entrepreneur, including:  ‘Top Entrepreneurs Award 1999’ by Red Herring, Entrepreneur of the Year 2000 by the Harvard Business School Club of Japan, and was listed in ’25 Rising Stars’ by Fortune Magazine in April 2001.

Mr. Mikitani received his B.A. from Hitotsubashi University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Michael O'Connell

Michael O'Connell is the Managing Director and President of Anhalt, O'Connell & Steffanci, Inc., an investment management firm with $800 million under management.

Previously, Mr. O'Connell owned and operated the National Lines Bureau, the ship mooring company for the Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors.

Mr. O'Connell is currently an investor in over 20 private companies. He received his BA, with high honors, from Harvard College, and his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Peterson Ventures

Mr. Peterson also teaches a second-year real estate course at Stanford Business School.  Prior to founding Peterson Ventures, Mr. Peterson worked as the CFO, Management Board member and Managing Partner of the Trammell Crow Company, a leading real estate investment firm.

At present, Mr. Peterson serves on the boards of a number of portfolio companies including jetBlue, Road Rescue, AccuDocs, Bay Logics, Inc. and RentWise, LLC. In addition, he is an advisor to Lazard Freres real estate group and a member of the Board of Franklin Covey and of Dermody Properties. Mr. Peterson received his BA from Brigham Young University and his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Howard Stevenson

Howard Stevenson is the Sarofim-Rock Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. The Sarofim-Rock Chair was established in 1982 to provide a continuing base for research and teaching in the field of entrepreneurship. Dr. Stevenson is its first incumbent. The program for entrepreneurial studies uses a multi-disciplinary approach to the creation and maintenance of entrepreneurial focus of business organizations. He is a Senior Associate Dean and Director of External Relations and Chair of the Latin American Advisory Group. He also served as Senior Associate Dean and Director of Financial and Information Systems for Harvard Business School from 1991 to 1994. He has been chairperson of the Owner/President Manager Program in Executive Education and of the Publications Review Board for the Harvard Business School Press of Harvard Business School Publishing Company.

Steve Wheelwright

Steve Wheelwright recently retired from his position as the Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He also served as Senior Associate Dean and Director of Faculty Hiring and Planning and had oversight responsibility for distance learning.

In his research, Professor Wheelwright examines product and process development and their connection with competitive advantage and operations excellence. He has co-authored several works with Harvard Business School colleague Kim Clark, most recently Leading Product Development: The Senior Manager's Guide to Creating and Shaping the Enterprise. Along with Harvard colleagues Bob Hayes and Kim Clark, Professor Wheelwright has also published the highly regarded book, Dynamic Manufacturing: Creating the Learning Organization, which analyzes some of the manufacturing industry's most pressing problems. Dr. Wheelwright is also the author or co-author of more than ten other books.

Previously, Dr. Wheelwright was Vice President of Sales in a family-owned printing company and has consulted in the areas of business/operations strategy and improving product development capabilities. Dr. Wheelwright currently serves on the board of directors of Quantum Corporation, Heartport, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., O.C. Tanner Company, and Franklin-Covey. Dr. Wheelwright received his BS from the University of Utah and his MBA and PhD from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.
